SUMMARY:The Colour of Emotion: Vicki McFarland
DESCRIPTION:The Colour of Emotion: Vicki McFarland\nJanuary 18 – March 4\, 2023\nUsing her unusual pouring technique\, artist Vicki McFarland engages in a dialogue with color\, shape and geometry. Intuitive by nature\, she creates work that evokes an emotional response in her viewers. She is often guided by her choice of music while in her studio and we can readily see this influence through rhythm\, dynamics\, melody\, tone\, texture and form. All are masterfully transferred and interpreted on her canvasses. Typically\, she will pick a song and let rhythm become part of the design process.

SUMMARY:Art + Climate = Change
DESCRIPTION:Art + Climate = Change\nMarch 10 – April 22\, 2023\nClimate change is an issue that has been top of mind for many: there are those who doubt that it is a genuine concern\, while others predict global catastrophe looming in a near future. Science has weighed in on the subject with disturbing results\, and politicians continue to meet to discuss the global impacts and debate economic repercussions. Environmentalists continue to press for more responsible management of the natural world. This exhibition offers a platform for artists of all skill levels in Chatham-Kent to creatively engage with this issue and visualize how we might arrive at a better understanding of our current situation and how it impacts life right here at home.

SUMMARY:A Continuing Saga: Resistance and Resilience Norm Barney
DESCRIPTION:A Continuing Saga: Resistance and Resilience Norm Barney\nApril 26 – June 10\, 2023\nBeing of European and Indigenous descent\, it is this heritage that captures Norm Barney’s imagination most significantly in this exhibition. An avid collector of nostalgia and tourist objects of the sort now commonly found in thrift stores and flea markets\, Barney brings these objects to light as he explores his family history through wry and pointed observation. Using the simplifications of kitsch to expose the stereotypes that popular culture seems so eager to provide\, the result is entertaining\, complex\, and thought-provoking.

SUMMARY:Speed Run: Malik McKoy
DESCRIPTION:Speed Run: Malik McKoy\nJanuary 31 – March 23\, 2025\nUtilizing digital media such as animation and augmented reality\, Malik Mckoy’s Speed Run transports you light-years away\, immersing you in the galaxy’s center. \nHowever\, you’re not alone. \nYou discover a being latched onto a spacecraft in an effort to save themselves and their lonely planet from being vacuumed into the ever-present black hole. Stars whizz by\, receding into the distance while the gravitational pull forces them to converge in the abyss. The spacecraft’s engine manages to keep all parties suspended in space while 72% of the continuum has already vanished. \nHow much longer can they hold on? \nWill the fuel run out? \nWill the event ever cease?

SUMMARY:Herbaria
DESCRIPTION:Herbaria\nJuly 4 – September 28\, 2025\nHerbaria is a group exhibition that reflects on humanity’s fragile and evolving relationship with plant life and the systems that shape our understanding of it. Rooted in Chatham-Kent’s agricultural legacy—from Indigenous practices and European homesteading to today’s industrial farming—this exhibition resonates with the region’s deep ecological history and the urgent challenges of food security and climate change. SUMMARY:Storybook Realism: Jodi Edwards Wright
DESCRIPTION:Storybook Realism: Jodi Edwards Wright\nAugust 6 – November 15\, 2025\nSelf-described\, storybook realism blends the charm of children’s book illustrations with realistic\, three dimensional embroidered animal masks in Jodi Edwards Wright’s work. Using only thread and water-soluble stabilizer\, she builds intricate\, textured sculptures that combine machine and hand embroidery techniques to mimic fur\, feathers\, and facial expressions. Inspired by illustrators like Beatrix Potter and her father’s love of nature\, Wright’s work humanizes animals to foster empathy and environmental awareness. Her art not only honors the tradition of textile work but also aims to captivate audiences through its detail\, whimsy\, and emotional resonance.

SUMMARY:RAFT
DESCRIPTION:RAFT is a collaborative exploration of unseen labour\, handmade processes\, and the transformation of everyday working environments. \nDrawing inspiration from the historical figure of the rag‑picker and contemporary textile workers in Kutch\, Gujarat\, the artists’ shared interest in the handmade versus the mass‑produced lead to a sculptural installation based on a washing tank used in cloth‑dyeing practices\, reimagined as a 20‑foot steel frame. \nWithin this structure\, the artists present paper works\, textiles\, and fabrics that reflect their ongoing exchange of research and materials\, and their commitment to amplifying the histories and gestures embedded in craft and manual work. \nKaren Kraven is a Montreal-based artist working with photography\, sculpture and installation. Influenced by her father’s (and his father’s) knitting factory\, which stopped manufacturing the year that she was born\, and by her mother’s pursuit in fashion\, her recent work has investigated the garment-making process\, to deconstruct and reconstruct the off-cuts of patterns. \nRecent solo exhibitions have included Bloemenlust at Oakville Galleries\, Ontario (2025)\, Fray at Galerie Nicholas Robert\, Toronto (2024)\, Le Chiffonnier at AXENÉO7\, Gatineau (2022)\, Hoist at PLATFORM Centre\, Winnipeg (2022) and Lull at Latitude 53\, Edmonton (2020). Reviews of Kraven’s work have been published in C Magazine\, Canadian Art\, Momus and Artforum. She is currently an Assistant Professor in Visual Studies with the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture\, Landscape\, and Design at the University of Toronto. \nSwapnaa Tamhane (b. 1976\, Toronto\, based in Montreal)\, works to destabilize and untether colonial constructs as an artist\, curator\, and writer. Her process focuses on drawing\, considering the presence of her hand in making paper and the treatment of surfaces. She works in collaboration and a skill-sharing process with artisan-designers in Kutch\, Gujarat\, India\, working with block printing\, embroidery\, and weaving. \nShe has an MFA in Fibres & Material Practices\, Concordia University\, Montreal. Residencies have been held at ISCP\, Brooklyn\, Cité internationales des arts\, Paris\, Bemis Centre for Contemporary Art\, Omaha\, and Museum der Moderne Salzburg\, Austria. Exhibitions have been held ast Green Art Gallery\, Dubai; Patel Brown\, Toronto; Nature Morte\, Delhi; articule\, Montreal; Sculpture Park Jaipur; and Victoria & Albert Museum\, Dundee\, Scotland. Solo exhibitions include Royal Ontario Museum\, Toronto\, Surrey Art Gallery\, Surrey\, BC\, and Mead Art Museum\, Amherst. Tamhane was shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Psalms Part One: Bryan Halls
DESCRIPTION:Psalms Part One: Bryan Halls\nFebruary 4 – May 31\, 2026\nPsalms: Part One presents the first selections from Psalms 1 through 30\, marking the beginning of Bryan Halls’ multi year devotional undertaking to create an artwork for each of the One-Hundred-Fifty Psalms. For Halls\, this project is not merely an artistic challenge but a spiritual practice “much like a monk painting every inch of his cell.” Working in stark black and white\, he contrasts the modern world’s darkness with the clarity of Divine Light. Dedicated to glorifying God through his work\, Halls offers a glimpse into a lifelong act of faith and creation.
