SUMMARY:Hyphenated
DESCRIPTION:HYPHENATED\nLana Matskiv\nApril 17 – July 5\, 2026\nHyphenated brings together over forty works by Lana Matskiv that explore the hyphen as both lived experience and poetic metaphor. Through paintings\, drawings\, collages\, and installations\, the exhibition reflects on hyphenated Canadian identities—linking ancestry and belonging—not as division\, but as connection. Extending beyond ethnicity\, the works consider relationships across time\, land\, memory\, and shared human aspirations. Grounded in Chatham-Kent\, itself a hyphenated place\, the exhibition reflects Canada’s layered cultural fabric. Drawing on Ukrainian and contemporary influences\, Matskiv’s practice affirms identity as an evolving space of collective belonging and strength.

SUMMARY:RAFT
DESCRIPTION:RAFT is a collaborative exploration of unseen labour\, handmade processes\, and the transformation of everyday working environments. \nDrawing inspiration from the historical figure of the rag‑picker and contemporary textile workers in Kutch\, Gujarat\, the artists’ shared interest in the handmade versus the mass‑produced lead to a sculptural installation based on a washing tank used in cloth‑dyeing practices\, reimagined as a 20‑foot steel frame. \nWithin this structure\, the artists present paper works\, textiles\, and fabrics that reflect their ongoing exchange of research and materials\, and their commitment to amplifying the histories and gestures embedded in craft and manual work. \nKaren Kraven is a Montreal-based artist working with photography\, sculpture and installation. Influenced by her father’s (and his father’s) knitting factory\, which stopped manufacturing the year that she was born\, and by her mother’s pursuit in fashion\, her recent work has investigated the garment-making process\, to deconstruct and reconstruct the off-cuts of patterns. \nRecent solo exhibitions have included Bloemenlust at Oakville Galleries\, Ontario (2025)\, Fray at Galerie Nicholas Robert\, Toronto (2024)\, Le Chiffonnier at AXENÉO7\, Gatineau (2022)\, Hoist at PLATFORM Centre\, Winnipeg (2022) and Lull at Latitude 53\, Edmonton (2020). Reviews of Kraven’s work have been published in C Magazine\, Canadian Art\, Momus and Artforum. She is currently an Assistant Professor in Visual Studies with the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture\, Landscape\, and Design at the University of Toronto. \nSwapnaa Tamhane (b. 1976\, Toronto\, based in Montreal)\, works to destabilize and untether colonial constructs as an artist\, curator\, and writer. Her process focuses on drawing\, considering the presence of her hand in making paper and the treatment of surfaces. She works in collaboration and a skill-sharing process with artisan-designers in Kutch\, Gujarat\, India\, working with block printing\, embroidery\, and weaving. \nShe has an MFA in Fibres & Material Practices\, Concordia University\, Montreal. Residencies have been held at ISCP\, Brooklyn\, Cité internationales des arts\, Paris\, Bemis Centre for Contemporary Art\, Omaha\, and Museum der Moderne Salzburg\, Austria. Exhibitions have been held ast Green Art Gallery\, Dubai; Patel Brown\, Toronto; Nature Morte\, Delhi; articule\, Montreal; Sculpture Park Jaipur; and Victoria & Albert Museum\, Dundee\, Scotland. Solo exhibitions include Royal Ontario Museum\, Toronto\, Surrey Art Gallery\, Surrey\, BC\, and Mead Art Museum\, Amherst. Tamhane was shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award\, 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Speed Run: Malik McKoy\nJanuary 31 – March 23\, 2025\nUtilizing digital media such as animation and augmented reality\, Malik Mckoy’s Speed Run transports you light-years away\, immersing you in the galaxy’s center. \nHowever\, you’re not alone. \nYou discover a being latched onto a spacecraft in an effort to save themselves and their lonely planet from being vacuumed into the ever-present black hole. Stars whizz by\, receding into the distance while the gravitational pull forces them to converge in the abyss. The spacecraft’s engine manages to keep all parties suspended in space while 72% of the continuum has already vanished. \nHow much longer can they hold on? \nWill the fuel run out? \nWill the event ever cease?

SUMMARY:GardenShip and State
DESCRIPTION:GardenShip and State\nAugust 23 – October 20\, 2024\nThis exhibition brings together 21 artists and writers who engage in decolonial critique\,environmental activism\, and twenty-first century artistic practices to address what is arguably the problem of our times: environmental catastrophe. It asks how we can work together and create together as a global community to restore the planet – while respecting differences and seeking to repair divisions and address injustices brought about by colonialism. Co-curated by Jeff Thomas and Patrick Mahon\, the exhibition features a vast array of works\, many produced over a two-year period and originally shown at Museum London in 2021-22. The results of conversations between the artists and writers\, as well as oftentimes with members of local communities\, those exciting artworks are being presented at the Thames Art Gallery alongside new and updated projects. For this version of GardenShip and State\, important environmental projects by artists and activists from the Chatham region are being highlighted on the mezzanine\, as well.

SUMMARY:ODYSSEY: Kelly Richardson
DESCRIPTION:ODYSSEY: Kelly Richardson\nJune 14 – August 11\, 2024\nWeaving myth and metaphor with scientific research and digital technologies\, Kelly Richardson: Odyssey invites visitors on a journey through time and space in order to reflect on the present – through three large-scale video works. Origin Stories (2023) visualises the current extinction crisis through a seemingly endless field of diamond-like crystals\, each of which represents a species lost to resource extraction and climate change. The HALO trilogy (2021) looks to a fiery moon for signs of the conditions we now face after decades of insufficient action. Finally\, Pillars of Dawn (2019) brings viewers back to Earth\, now hundreds of years in the future\, as crystals blanket the planet in a beautiful but chilling representation of cumulative loss of complex life. Together\, these three works ask visitors to consider what we truly value\, raising an urgent call for humanity to responsibly reconnect with our living planet while time remains.

SUMMARY:Chapters Now Through Four: Tracy Root
DESCRIPTION:Chapters Now Through Four: Tracy Root\nApril 5 – June 2\, 2024\nBorn in Shrewsbury\, England\, Tracy Root arrived in Chatham-Kent just before the COVID pandemic. Impacted by the isolation she was experiencing\, she quickly adapted to the area’s surroundings\, instinctively painting its fields and fauna. With her trademark use of expressive symbolism\, she creates images resonant with personal iconography and psychology\, this retrospective suggests the incredible commitment and production this artist has achieved throughout her career. Now living with Stage 4 cancer\, “Chapters Now Through Four” reflects a life fully committed to the pursuit of painting\, and an artistic trajectory that lands firmly in the present.

SUMMARY:The Blue Afar: Amanda McCavour
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Afar: Amanda McCavour\nJanuary 26 – March 24\, 2024\nArtist Amanda McCavour uses thread to create sublime installations of embroidered objects in space. Her fantastical\, dreamlike environments consider the play of light on matter and the peculiarities of the natural world. In Far Away Blue Fields\, McCavour permeates our visual field with a cloudburst of blooming flowers hung from the gallery’s ceiling by tiny thread. Affixed to the wall\, The Horizon\, the Ocean\, the Sky features a gathering of leaves\, weeds\, birds\, and bees that read like an immense biological archive. Both installations speculate on the colour blue. Not only is our physical environment composed of blue things like water\, gemstones\, minerals\, and flora but blue is also associated with the textures of the humancondition. In McCavour’s work\, it is used to express the infinitesimal breadth of our emotions and shapes our relationship to the earth and sky above.

SUMMARY:Skids\, Skips and Prints: Lowell Bradshaw
DESCRIPTION:Skids\, Skips and Prints: Lowell Bradshaw\nNovember 3\, 2023 – January 14\, 2024\nLowell Bradshaw pushes digital and information into new forms of visual possibilities. By manipulating images drawn from electronic media within the field of painting\, the spaces he creates open multiple discursive readings and a contextual tension that oscillates between cohesion and erasure. As importantly\, perhaps\, the artist enlists the pleasure of looking to animate the work\, as he presents a practice rooted in discourse\, contemplation\, and craftsmanship.
